About the role

The Associate Director of Strategic Projects & Portfolio is accountable for managing the Data Science & AI Portfolio of projects and the Strategic Project Governance for the Function.

In the DS&AI Business Planning & Operations, we support DS&AI’s mission to use Data and AI to turn science into medicines more quickly, more efficiently and with higher success rate.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join the DS&AI Business Planning & Operations Department within DS&AI with a focus on running our diverse portfolio of projects and working with the DS&AI Leadership Team to manage our Strategic Projects. We are looking for someone with strong project management skills and experience working with Senior Leadership who wants to contribute towards embedding DS&AI in R&D.

Reporting directly to the Data Science & AI Head of Business Planning & Operations, you will work directly with internal customers including our Leadership Team, Project Leads, and Project Managers to ensure that DS&AI’s portfolio is tracked and maintained and ensure our Strategic Projects are delivering to time, cost & quality.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide governance and portfolio management leadership for Global Function

  • Runs day-to-day operations to ensure timely completion of project

  • Implement governance processes in collaboration with DS&AI Leadership Team and relevant collaborators

  • Handles key interactions and relationships with senior internal partners through the high levels of self-awareness and business acumen.

  • Leads all aspects of the development of strategic risk analysis and subsequent control plans for programmes and actively uses these to assess the effect of changes in terms of risks, costs, timescales and resources; involves others when needed.

  • Ensures that impact and changes resulting from projects/programmes are effectively communicated to the business

  • Ensures portfolio and governance documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately

  • Partner with project leaders, project managers and portfolio managers on successful delivery of portfolio management and governance processes

  • Manages relationships with key business partners to ensure business requirements are effectively captured and committed to objectives

  • Build, lead and handle relationships with third parties and with external contractors

Essential experience

  • Business degree and/or life science degree or equivalent experience

  • Portfolio management experience

  • Governance management experience

  • Experience of managing large complex projects/programmes or in a similar role

  • Well-developed organisational and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to influence at very senior level

  • Experience of working and manging third party suppliers

  • Agile expertise
