Job BI Engineer in Toronto

Unity Health Toronto is embarking on a multi-year digital, clinical transformation project to implement a new electronic patient record solution across all sites. The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) project is a pillar of enabling exemplary patient experience and quality of care and therefore see this not as an information technology initiative, but as one founded in clinical transformation and care redesign.

Job Profile:

This newly created role, EPR Business Intelligence Developer will be responsible for working closely with the project team as well as internal stakeholders to develop the business intelligence and reporting tools for the organization. The role is responsible for the design, build, implementation, support and optimization of the EPR vendor’s analytics and reporting modules.

In addition, the EPR Business Intelligence Developer is also responsible for creating Business Intelligence data sources in a database environment for use by the Decision Support team and other teams within the organization. This involves leveraging technical expertise to design the tables, creating the associated ETL processes to populate them and developing procedures to capture and track errors. This will also require the Business Intelligence Developer to work with other departments on data management and extraction from internal and external systems for the purposes of clinical and operational reporting.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Data Analysis & Interpretation
    • Lead support for clinical and non-clinical clients in a variety of analytical needs including: development of robust analytical plans, statistical analysis, key performance indicators, benchmarking, data visualizations, and routine and ad hoc reporting as it relates to the EPR
    • Work closely with clients to create high impact analytical products including, simple to more advanced analysis, models or reports that generate meaningful insights, and is presented in an effective way. Responsible for the work from start to finish including the approach, validation/data quality and the documentation of technical specifications.
    • Design and build interactive and static data visualizations using various reporting software programs in order to provide insights and enable strategic business decisions to be made.
  • Dashboard and Report Development
    • Program complex queries using SQL Server T-SQL, IBM Netezza SQL and/or SAS in order to retrieve required data and ensure that reports contain the most up-to-date information.
    • Generate results for specific metrics to be shared with external organizations in order to meet our commitments to government bodies.
    • Design and develop dashboards using EPR tools and other software programs to present statistics and measures that cut across all areas within Unity Health Toronto.
  • ETL Development
    • Design, develop and schedule ETL procedures to transfer information needed for Business Intelligence reporting. This includes T-SQL programming, VBA programming as well as the creation and scheduling of SSIS integration packages in SQL Server.
    • Conduct periodic reviews of ETL procedures on a regular basis in order to analyze execution times and other performance indicators. Make improvements in order to reduce runtimes, increase efficiency and optimize overall performance of the Business Intelligence server.
  • System and Technical Support
    • Provide system administration and technical support for use of Business Intelligence tools. Ensure permissions on each account are suitable for its intended purpose while maintaining information security.
  • Client Consultation
    • Lead meetings with stakeholders on a regular basis in order to facilitate requirements gathering for new reporting, provide status updates on work in progress and discuss findings during the development process.
    • Formulate development plan for assigned projects, create design templates for new reports and provide high-level timelines to manage client expectations.
  • Support data governance activities
    • Implements and maintains the enterprise?wide reporting and security policy including appropriate access to EPR data
    • Maintains EPR data dictionaries
    • Implements the build, security, and data segregation strategies for the EPR
    • Reviews data requests, triages, prioritizes, tests and publishes approved requests
    • Validates data requests for accuracy and to data quality standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative discipline such as Computer Science, Data Analytics, Mathematics or Statistics. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a decision support, business intelligence or analytical environment; healthcare experience is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with visualization tools. Experience with Tableau Server an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in SQL with a focus on SQL Server preferred.
  • Subject matter expertise in the areas of BI solutions, data warehousing and visualization.
  • Experience with hospital data and/or healthcare environments is an asset.
  • Experience with SAS, Python and/or R is an asset.
  • Experience with SSIS is an asset.
  • Experience with hospital data (e.g. DAD, NACRS); knowledgeable within the health care environment and of industry trends
  • Experience working in a complex data environment, including enterprise data warehouses and other relational databases. Ability to transform data from non-traditional data sources (other reports, external sites and systems, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging data mining techniques to process large scale data and assemble complex, high quality datasets
  • Ability to analyze data and present complex information in a simple to understand manner.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple work assignments/timelines and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in day-to-day work with a focus on quality of work, accuracy and customer service.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office Suite (Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint)
