About Us

The Saskatchewan Pension Plan (SPP), was created in 1986 and is a fully funded, capital accumulation plan created by the provincial government. SPP provides a professionally managed pension plan at low fees to individuals with little or no access to employer-sponsored pensions. SPP has over $700 M in assets under management and over 32,000 members. It ranks 24th among the top 50 defined contribution pension plans in Canada.

The Opportunity

The SPP is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual who is passionate about enhancing retirement security for individuals. You will play a key role in the growth of business memberships at SPP as a Business Development Consultant in Saskatchewan. As a member of the business development team, you will work closely with the Business Development Manager who is based out of Saskatoon.

The goal: To find, foster and build relationships with new and existing clients, industry stakeholders, and business associations in order to build and grow membership in SPP.

Specifically, the role is responsible for:

  • Strategically marketing the plan and applying sales strategies to attract new employer plans for a broad range of industry sectors in support of the business development strategic growth plans;
  • Providing support and guidance in creating strategic plans for business development growth strategies including researching, planning and developing implementation plans for new target market initiatives;
  • Raising the profile of the SPP by leading the development of a network and building connections in the business communities including associations, memberships or strategic partners; speaking at conferences and serving on councils and boards;
  • Managing employer client relationships, anticipating, planning for and providing member and employer services to existing plan members including educational sessions and presentations to increase individual member enrollments with existing employer plans and to increase member retention at retirement;
  • Leading the alignment between business development and marketing and communication strategies;
  • Providing oversight and guidance for creating and maintaining business development metrics and client relationship management tools;
  • Managing the coordination of team participation at trade shows and events; and
  • Other related projects and duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

As our successful candidate you will have experience in business development and sales, combined with a strong financial acumen. You are flexible and adaptable to change. You will have experience in the financial sector and, specifically, solid knowledge and understanding of pension plans and retirement savings products.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Public Relations or Marketing, and five years of directly related experience. Supplementation with a CFA, CFP, CPA, CEBS or another appropriate designation from the financial or pension industry sectors is a definite asset. The successful candidate must pass the Canadian Investment Funds Course within the first year of employment.

You will require skills and experience in business development strategies as well as developing and enhancing business member, industry stakeholder, and business association relationships. You will be able to influence membership sales through strong networking partnerships and are not afraid to cold call potential leads. Additional skills vital to your success are communication, presentation skills, negotiation, marketing, data analysis and project management. This position will also be involved in researching, planning and implementing new target market initiatives, pursing leads and moving them through the sign-up cycle and maintenance and growth of SPP’s business plans.

The successful candidate will interact with others in a friendly and approachable manner, helping maintain positive relations between members and member service staff. They will also collaborate with SPP member service staff to ensure ongoing enhancement of member experiences.

You will have the ability to create and deliver presentations that are tailored to the audience needs and have excellent verbal communication skills. You will have the ability to manage your own time effectively and be highly motivated to stay organized and drive to targets.

This role will require flexibility in work hours to attend networking events (at times in the evenings) and will involve travel approximately 40 % - 60% of the time with some overnight stays, primarily within Saskatchewan. A valid Saskatchewan Driver's license is required for the role. This position will work remotely in accordance with our Government of Saskatchewan Remote Work Policy.
