Position Description

purpose and accountability

Reporting to the Director of Student Support Services and working with Area Directors and Principals of the assigned Areas, the purpose of this position is to provide proactive assistance and support to resolve school/ family concerns and issues which may arise in ongoing interactions and communications.

major responsibilities

  • Promotes a better understanding between the school and the parent through an in-depth knowledge of the schools, public education and community agency services.

  • Supports the family and schools in accessing community agency resources and services on behalf of the child/youth.

  • Provides support to families by meeting with families as needed; communicating with the parent/guardian; connecting the family with community resources, working with parenting groups; provide support to parents/caregivers regarding home based behavioral plans in order to promote student success and family wellness, giving parents an opportunity to be a part of the IPP and an Attendance Improvement Plan.

  • Supports schools and families by providing mediation and communication services to both parties as requested or needed.

  • Assists schools and staff, when requested, to provide support when working with individuals or group of parents.

  • Works as a member of the Student Services Student Response Team and participates in problem solving in collaboration with team members.

  • Remains current with respect to related Calgary Board of Education policies and procedures.

  • Liaises with other professionals, initiates and organizes multidisciplinary meetings as required by working with internal and external professionals

  • Maintains accurate documentation.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A university degree in a related area such as guidance, counseling or social work.

  • A minimum of five years related experience in an educational organization or helping profession position, including working with culturally diverse student populations.

  • An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • The ability to work independently and take initiative is required.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate ideas or concepts.

  • The ability to work effectively and productively in an interdisciplinary team and to engage actively in team learning is necessary.

  • Must have the ability to mediate problem solving processes involving team members, school personnel, parents and community agencies.

  • Personal suitability.
