Administrative New Full-time Position

This position, reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP) - Institutional Planning, Research and Quality, provides Business Intelligence (BI) related services on a wide range of college activities at the institutional and program level, in a fast-paced and challenging environment. A multidisciplinary position with considerable complexity, responsible for the data quality and governance of relevant data from a wide variety of sources, both internal and external, assessing additional information needs and working closely with key contacts to gather requirements and identify solutions that produce accurate, reliable, timely and user-friendly data, reports, and dashboards.

The incumbent will be responsible for BI project planning, BI data governance, quality assurance, data modeling, metadata architect support for all Institutional Research projects. This includes, but is not limited to, architecture, deployment, analysis, implementation, development, rollout, documentation, and ongoing support of PowerBI applications used by the institution to deliver BI to varied constituents, including students, applicants, alumni, employees and the general public. The analysis and reports will be used to inform decision-making by the college's academic leadership and senior management. The position must respect federal and provincial privacy legislation, as the incumbent will have access to confidential personal information, particularly about students and employees.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement, consisting of both on-site and remote presence.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Institutional Planning, Research and Quality, support initiation of BI project planning. Lead or facilitate stakeholder requirement sessions, scope development, deliverable definitions, timeline tracking and security/permissions requirements
  • Work with subject matter experts and business systems analysts to uncover the appropriate sources of data to target data mappings for a proposed Bl project or data warehousing extension. Develop understanding of which business processes use which data and what the data means in the context of specific processes
  • Translate user requirements into technical architecture vision and implementation plans, going from design to implementation to production
  • Implement proven project management methods that include but are not limited to, project documentation, scheduling, project life cycle planning and implementation
  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with internal stakeholders (e.g., IT) to ensure effective delivery, and ongoing access, to the various BI solutions created
  • Create a data governance plan and process for data used in the cross-college BI solutions developed by Institutional Research; Facilitate stakeholder discussions to establish, document, and track college-wide data definitions
  • Create a testing plan outlining how the integrity of the data mart, metadata, and dashboard will be tested to ensure that the data is reconciled correctly
  • The testing plan will be written in a manner that will be executable by anyone for any future use
  • Conduct user interviews to validate the transformation rules. Evaluate data quality and provide written feedback as required
  • Facilitate user acceptance testing to ensure stakeholder requirements are met before launch of the BI solution
  • Summarize findings and prioritize tasks for before launch or subsequent phases
  • Develop detailed written guides for end users
  • Provide input and assistance for the requirements of the database design for the data mart/warehouse
  • Drive the collection of new data, refinement of existing data sources, working with the IT and Governance and Risk departments to ensure compliance of data standards
  • Metadata management by ensuring business definitions are implemented in Master File


Qualifications:

  • Four Year degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Three years of experience in a similar capacity
  • Experience with the implementation and delivery of projects; participation in all aspects of the project life cycle
  • Solid analytical problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge and experience with data quality and governance processes and practices
  • Strong working experience with data manipulating, data modelling, or working with data warehousing
  • Experience of working in the area data management including data analysis, gap analysis and data mapping
  • Extensive experience in developing, maintaining, and managing Power BI (or similar – Tableau, Cognos, etc.) driven dashboards & analytics and working knowledge of Power BI administration/architecture
  • Ability to write SQL and other programming code (i.e. DAX Code) to perform queries and analysis.
  • Advanced skills with MS Office suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to balance multiple priorities and to manage time effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, negotiation, issue or conflict identification and resolution skills with strong skills in building strong, collaborative partnerships with stakeholders
  • Preparing clear, concise documentation and reports
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-organizational team members
  • Building trust and facilitating communication and co-operation
  • Experience working with student and institutional data in a postsecondary environment is preferred
