Director, Analytics & Business Planning, Canadian Business Banking


Purpose


The Director, Analytics & Business Planning leads and oversees Business Intelligence and MIS in Canadian Business Banking ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.


This role supports the Canadian Business Bank’s Leadership team in enhancing and managing the Canadian Business Bank’s portfolio and profitability by overseeing the Analytics function as well as Business Planning function in conjunction with Canadian Banking Finance.


The Director oversees the development of the roadmap and delivery of value-add analytics & insights, robust Business Intelligence & MIS, Data & Platform strategy, Sales metrics development, Performance & Portfolio management tools, and Cross-sell & Prospect lead generation. The Director ensures latest development in data/analytics space such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are leveraged to enhance the Canadian Business Bank’s business objectives.


Accountabilities:


  • A) Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.


  • B) Oversee development and management of Analytics for Commercial Bank by: Contribute to the Commercial Bank profit objectives through value-add portfolio and channel insights:


o Oversee the strategic management of product, portfolio, client and channel reporting and analytics to evaluate profitability and performance
o Develop roadmap and enable delivery of advanced analytics to drive profit enhancement through product pricing recommendations
o Oversee development of client analytics and lead generation capabilities to enhance cross-sell opportunities
o Ensure latest industry developments and tools form part of the overall Analytics development roadmap


  • Oversee the development of performance management and metric strategy and execution by:


o Overseeing the planning and analysis of the annual Commercial Banking performance metric framework development
o Providing support to the Commercial Bank leadership team for ongoing performance management
o Ensuring Commercial Bank leadership team has support and tools to enable performance management of field teams and portfolio management of sales team portfolios


  • Ensure sound Management Information Systems and platforms


o Overseeing development and management of data strategy and Management Information Systems for Commercial Banking working with GBM, IT&S, Finance
o Ensure data is complete, accurate, consistent and available on a timely basis.


  • Perform the Data Steward function for Commercial Bank: As subject matter experts for their domains, the Data Steward is accountable for the data governance and oversight for their Data Domain and provides the leadership to drive adoption of the Bank’s data management strategy for his/her business line / functional group by:


o Leading their Domain Working Group to design, develop and implement strategies, standards and procedures to support the Data Domain while ensuring adherence to the enterprise data governance framework for data policies, standards and practices.
o Representing the Business Line / Functional Group for enterprise-level and cross-domain data management issues, including participating in the Enterprise Data Council, as needed.

o Supporting other parties within the Domain for their data needs and ensuring that regulatory and executive reporting and analytics have trusted data.
o Identifying and managing critical data elements, managing the business metadata and business glossary.
o In accordance with required Bank data compliance timelines, developing standards for sourcing data (access and maintenance) through Certified Data Sources, mapping data lineage, creating the business logic behind all data transformations and ensuring protection through comprehensive Service Level Agreements to ensure data quality.
o In accordance with required Bank data compliance timelines, monitoring data quality by establishing business rules (to test that the data meets expectations), setting acceptable thresholds, remediating data quality issues in a timely manner and identifying opportunities to enhance overall data quality.
o Collaborating with the Data Custodian to address data quality issue management and data change management in a timely manner based on priority and severity.


  • C) Provide guidance on financial reporting, planning, forecasting and expense management for Commercial Bank working closely with the Canadian Banking Finance team:


o Oversee delivery of strategically relevant financial and operational data and reports are available to Commercial Bank Leadership team
o Direct strategic business analysis on the business line to drive better understanding of key measures and possible opportunities for growth and increased profitability. Evaluate strategic business proposals and outsourcing opportunities.
o Provide guidance on development of Profit Plan for Commercial bank through effective top line targets based on business opportunity as well as effective planning of new initiatives and expense management. Enable targets are appropriately distributed to the Commercial Bank business lines.
o Play an important role in the ongoing development of strategies and projects for all of Canadian Banking and Commercial Banking Management by participating at a strategic level / leading key teams and initiatives as appropriate and agreed to by the Commercial Banking Senior Leadership teams.
o Improve value and manage costs of Commercial Banking and individual areas within. Thoroughly understand the cost drivers, support area cost allocations and transfer pricing mechanisms to maximize Productivity and Operating Leverage of the business line.
o Ensure the provision and enhance the understanding of financial and business drivers and economics of the various Commercial Banking business lines. Assist line management in optimizing their operations from a financial perspective.


  • D) Develop team capability and manage team (direct and indirect reports) initiatives by:


o Providing day to day management of direct reports ensuring team goal alignment
o Developing team expertise in data mining and strong analytics capabilities
o Providing employee development opportunities
o Ensuring appropriate communication, coaching, delegation and support are provided to team and project resources to effectively optimize team productivity and long-term development plans.


  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.


  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

The Commercial Bank is a large contributor to Canadian Banking. The role and team will support sub-segments in Commercial Banking: Mid-Market Distribution, Real Estate Banking, Roynat, PESCG, Payments & Cash Management, Technology Innovation Banking, Franchising, Agriculture.


Education / Experience / Other Information:

  • Analysis is contingent upon excellent understanding of finance, profit drivers, transfer pricing, product knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of multiple, complex data sources across the Bank
  • Experienced senior financial professional with strong business acumen and a solid track record of seeing beyond the numbers to the effects on the business
  • Expert knowledge (CPA, MBA or commensurate experience) of all key financial measures and requirements plus experience with Statutory, Regulatory and Management reporting
  • The role requires a high degree of collaboration across wide ranging groups: Global Banking & Markets (GBM); GBP; Finance; GRM; Wealth Management; Retail Small Business; and various Commercial Banking areas.
  • Excellent analytics, strategic thinking, organizational know-how and influencing skills are critical for success
  • Strong technical skills in Finance, Math, Statistics, Computer Science or related fields
  • Outstanding general management and communication skills and an ongoing desire to develop / interact with supervisor / peers / reports in a positive, open and honest manner
  • A track record that shows a results orientation and ability to move multiple projects forward, execute and implement multiple tasks well
  • Excellent design and delivery capabilities
  • Strong visionary and planning capability
  • High degree of knowledge of commercial products and profit drivers
  • Experience with open-source languages such as Python, Django, Flask, JS, D3, Angular an asset
  • Experience with RDBMs, Cassandra, HDFS, and/or graph databases an asset
  • Ability to work non-standard hours as required
  • Ability to complete work in a fast-paced environment with complex tasks and deliverables with tight timelines and significant interdependencies
