Purpose

Leads the development and execution of Scotia Global Asset Management’s competitive intelligence strategy in Canada as well as product analytics function. This senior role will engage wealth management leadership, business partners, industry peers and external data and research providers to develop timely and insightful assessments of the competitive landscape, product trends and industry developments. The successful candidate is a highly motivated individual with deep understanding of the Canadian asset management landscape, extensive experience extracting, manipulating, and visualizing insights from large data sets and is comfortable presenting and debating findings to senior executives.


Accountabilities


Competitive Intelligence:

  • Lead, motivate and coach a small team of competitive intelligence and product analytics professionals.
  • A key member of the Scotia Global Asset Management’s Product management team. The incumbent will lead the development of high impact competitive intelligence to drive discussions, deepen industry knowledge, and influence product development and management decision making.
  • Proactively lead the thought leadership for the Asset Management executive team on asset management product, investment trends, competitive positioning through ad-hoc and deep-dive research and provide input to help shape strategic direction for the broader business.
  • Deepen existing and develop new senior relationships with internal stakeholders and industry partners to help shape and model competitive intelligence, augment available datasets and identify and assess emerging trends.
  • Oversee and contribute to the production and ongoing enhancement of regular reports and analysis utilizing internal and external datasets. Dimensions include product manufacturing, asset classes, pricing, series, bundling and investment dealer shelf management. Product types cover mutual funds, ETFs, private assets. Channel/client segments span across Canadian banks, independents, private investment counsel firms and institutional asset managers.
  • Set a high benchmark for timeliness, quality and accuracy, while proactively sourcing opportunities to automate and streamline processess to increase efficiecies and team capacity, utilizing strong financial modelling skills, database and/or Business Intelligence tools.
  • Serve as a go-to person for industry developments, updates, insights through news sources, researches, participations or interactions with industry organizations such as IFIC, CIFSC, etc.


Product Analytics:

  • Supervise the product analytics function that supports independent distribution partners with timely and insightful product analytics in order to promote positive advisor engagement and asset gathering opportunities. Analysis include product comparison, portfolio construction, simulation, as well as more complex customized requests.
  • Oversee the utilization and implementation of Morningstar Direct and other relevant invesment analysis applications. Support internal partners with online tools, training and liase with vendors as required.
  • Develop ad-hoc product positioning analytic reports in response to major industry developments. Participate in cross-functional teams to help deliver asset gathering strategies.


  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.


Education/Experience


  • University degree. CFA and/or MBA would be an asset.
  • Thorough understanding of the investment industry with more than 10 years of related experience preferably in competitive intelligence and product analytics roles. Strong wealth distribution channel knowledge.
  • A lifelong student of the asset management industry with demonstrated interest in competitive trends, product strategy and financial markets. You are highly curious and have a desire to continuously deepen industry knowledge and business impact.
  • Technically savvy, with well-developed understanding of data analytics, with extensive experience using various data and research platforms such as Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg, SimFund and Investor Economics.
  • A big picture thinker with the ability to support a culture of continuous improvement and data-driven decision making. You embrace technology to improve the quality, quantity and reliability of reporting, insights and recommendations to empower business decisions.
  • A natural collaborator with strong relationship management skills and a comfort with presenting research findings to senior leaders.
  • A high degree of proficiency using Microsoft Office suite, with advanced MS Excel modelling and PowerPoint skills. Excellent writing skills with the ability to synthesize large datasets and extensive analysis into persuasive insights and informed recommendations.
  • Self-motivated, with a high degree of accountability. You thrive in a team environment, have a focus on continuous improvement and experience leading and motivating a team of direct reports.
