Summary: Reporting to the Director of Operations of western Canada, the General Manager provides operational leadership for warehouse facilities across the company. We entrust our customer relationship to the General Manager to deliver service excellence, ensuring operational efficiency and achievement of customer contractual KPIs through; the establishment of strong customer relationships, achievement of P&L targets, focusing on team member engagement, development of their leadership team’s capabilities, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

Client

  • Leads the customer relationship through close daily contact, weekly review meetings, and monthly updates for reporting of KPI, CI and Financials, taking a pulse of the relationship and ensuring it remains strong
  • Resolves exceptions to operations and maintains contingency plans for operational interruptions such as; systems issues, transport issues, inventory concerns and labour
  • Ensures operations have the required resources and are organized to maximize performance and customer service within preapproved budget
  • Understands and manages impact of actions and interpersonal style when communicating with the customer
Leading the Team
  • Manages within the guidelines of company policies and procedures, best practices, and provincial employment standards, maintaining clear and open communication with leadership
  • Establishes performance goals to ensure required levels of productivity, accuracy, quality, cost and organizational objectives are met
  • Is a role model for the company culture with strong reinforcement of Metro’s ‘Our Way’ Values and leading the ‘Our Way’ program within their team.
  • Ensure that regular general meetings, team member events and engagement programs are in place and effectively implemented
  • Builds positive employee relations and leads team member initiatives to create and promote an environment where team members are involved and committed to the success of the business through continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensures managers and supervisors are well-trained and motivated to support requirements of customer contracts and the direction of the company
  • Recognizes team member performance by providing regular individual and team feedback utilizing management reporting tools and observations
  • Actively works on succession planning through selection, development and training of operations managers, supervisors, team leaders and support team members
  • Ensures onboarding and training programs are in place to ensure all team members receive the necessary information and training to become quickly effective in their job
  • Actively promotes open communications through individual, shift and team meetings to promote an informed and aligned work force
Commercial

  • Understands and has in-depth knowledge of commercial contract and executes operational plan to achieve customer account commercial terms and conditions
  • Provides reporting, analysis and improvement recommendations on achievement of key performance indicators
  • Ensures operational budget are controlled and can effectively explain all variances.
  • Reviews, approves and exports weekly labour hours for payroll processing
  • Works with their management team to develop and implement business plans to improve financial and service performance year over year
  • Implements controls necessary to keep expenditures within budget and meets with the customer on a monthly/quarterly basis to review financial and service performance
  • Ensures that customer and company KPI reporting is done in a timely and effective manner to accurately and proactively measure the performance requirements for their sites
Process
  • Overall responsibility for operational excellence of all warehouse processes
  • Ensures operations SOPs are up to-date, accurately reflect work best practice and standard processes and are used to facilitate team member training
  • Holds managers and supervisors accountable to ensure operations team members follow established SOPs and best practices
  • Oversees inventory procedures and systems accuracy to ensure all inventory KPIs are met
  • Ensures facility maintenance contracts are in place and facilities are clean, well maintained and safe.
  • Ensures team member compliance with quality assurance standards required to maintain a food-safe warehouse
  • Seeks ways to collaborate with peers to compare best practices
  • Collaborates effectively with cross functional leadership including; IT, Finance, Engineering, Project Management CI Team and Human Resources
Health and Safety
  • Ensure that a JHSC is in place and meets at a regular basis and is effective
  • Ensures managers, supervisors and team members comply with all regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in their jurisdiction including; safety, violence and harassment laws
  • Takes appropriate actions and follows-up on JH&SC recommendations
  • Ensures all SOPs and operating practices support a safe work environment
  • Monitors injury levels and equipment/product damage levels to ensure accidents and product/equipment damages are prevented
  • Ensures supervisors are discussing workplace safety in shift briefing meetings
Qualifications
  • Minimum ten (10) years warehouse leadership experience, with (5) years managerial experience, preferably at a 3PL distribution company
  • Experience in multi-facility and/or multi-client environment preferred
  • Previous experience with Warehouse Management Information System (WMS)
Skills
  • Operationally strong with sound business judgment obtained through supply chain experience at the managerial level.
  • Proven ability to consistently meet or exceed performance metrics (KPIs).
  • Takes initiative and can implement continuous improvement initiatives that drive financial and service excellence.
  • Able to lead change and motivate team members to adopt new methods and practices required to meet changing business needs.
  • Enhanced commercial financial skills for analysis and budgeting.
  • Ability to lead a team that supports the company’s values and business direction.
  • Systems savvy with the ability to create control tools through effective software applications primarily MS Excel and Word. Experience working with a warehouse management system (WMS).
  • Uses analytical reasoning to quickly understand and identify issues and propose solutions to solve problems to resolution.
  • Ability to create a high-performance team environment focused on process excellence and commercial results.
