Nasittuq provides Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS). The NWS is a joint Canada and United States early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in Northern Canada; a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position is responsible for maintaining road and runways as well as assisting with equipment maintenance.

Please note: This role is reserved for Inuit Candidates.

This is a full time, Unionized rotational position. The candidate must be comfortable working in colder climates, during a 6 week on, 6 weeks off rotation schedule. All travel to/from site, including board and meals, is provided.


RESPONSIBILITIES
:

  • Maintaining roads, grounds, and gravel surfaces to ensure safe route passage
  • Safe operation of standard construction and heavy equipment (front end loaders, dozers, graders, trucks, dump truck, forklift) to maintain roads, run-ways, and grounds
  • Performing daily checks prior to vehicle use
  • Assisting with Mobile Support Equipment (MSE) maintenance/repairs and documents maintenance routines
  • Cleaning vehicles, performing fuel dips and fuel transfers, and assisting with sealift material delivery
  • Responsible for cleanliness of buildings where MSE are kept
  • Loading and unloading helicopters and fixed wing aircraft
  • Shoveling snow / grounds
  • Responding to site preservation emergencies and environmental emergencies
  • Identifies maintenance requirements to the LSS Manager/Site Supervisor/delegate
  • Providing assistance to the FMT-V in conducting Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMI) and other trades as required when directed by the LSS Manager/Site Supervisor/delegate
  • Performing other duties as assigned that are transient in nature.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Grade 9 or combination of education and experience

CERTIFICATE(S) / LICENSE(S):

  • Licensed heavy equipment operator with Air Brake certification (DZ License)
  • Valid Class G driver’s license
  • Operators of GFE MSE must complete a Safe Backing course
  • Operators of GFE MSE being operated on airport ramps or runways must be authorized to do so by the appropriate Airport Authority

EXPERIENCE:

  • Related experience operating equipment (loaders, graders, dozers, dump trucks etc.) in a safe manner

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Truck and equipment safety
  • Water, sewer, and garbage truck operation
  • Operation of front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other pieces of heavy equipment
  • Equipment maintenance and storage
  • Road construction and maintenance techniques
  • Workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Record keeping system

COMPETENCIES / SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Operate single axel trucks in a safe and responsible manner
  • Operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Possess sound work ethics and problem-solving skills
  • Effective oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Documentation skills including ability to use MS Word and Excel
  • Effective time management skills and effective decision-making skills
  • Flexible and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability to travel as part of a small team to adjacent sites to perform HEO functions
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including Fall Arrest Harness, as required
  • Ability to work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook
  • Standard First Aid trained with CPR Level A (with valid certificate) preferred
