Position Summary:

The Senior Financial Analyst provides support with Seneca functions of financial planning related to the annual operating budget, including supporting faculty and departments with new requests.

The analyst provides training on completing new operating requests within the budget tool and ensures that requests are complete and accurate. The analyst provides various reports to the Finance Director, Executive Director, and VP for budget approval. Once the budget is approved, the analyst monitors activities for assigned portfolio of departments, and provides a forecast and analysis including highlighting risks.

The team currently works in a hybrid model as part of Seneca’s flexible work approach.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports annual planning and budgeting calendar of activities
  • Provides training, assistance and support to College faculties and departments in preparing annual budgets
  • Ensures budget requirements for College departments are accurate and complete
  • Prepares reports and supporting schedules for budget approval meetings
  • Monitors financial activity for assigned portfolio of departments during the year
  • Provides analysis of variances compared to budget, prior year actuals and forecast, for enrolment, staffing, and operating expenses
  • Assists in identifying areas of financial risks areas such as cost overruns and program profitability
  • Assists in updating training documents, documenting business processes, operating procedures and finance policies
  • Models potential financial outcomes on new initiatives
  • Prepares various reports and analysis as required by the Director, Executive Director and VP.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Minimum of a completed four (4) year Degree in Finance, Business or Accounting. If in another field of study, state how the education is related.
  • Professional designation (CPA) is required

Experience

· Minimum of five (5) years experience developing, maintaining and controlling multi-divisional budget and financial systems is required.
· Experience and knowledge of the postsecondary sector with direct experience in budgeting and forecasting is considered an asset.

Skills

· Advanced working knowledge/competence in the use of integrated financial systems and data management software tools to perform comprehensive analytical review procedures.
· Aptitude to work with a variety of technology, such as cloud-based systems (e.g., OneDrive, SharePoint), Microsoft Office programs, PeopleSoft - Projects, Hyperion system user manual – capital forms.
· Ability to resolve issues independently, with limited supervision by senior management.
· Demonstrated understanding of financial analytics, planning and forecasting techniques, as well as business processes.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to explain accounting procedures with non-financial personnel (Deans, Directors, Chairs and Manager) across the diverse College community.
· Evidence of sensitivity to the issues of working within a diverse environment.
· Strong knowledge and familiarity of regulations including:
o Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants CICA Handbook and to adhere to GAAP for a not-for-profit organization specific to capital assets.
o Government (MCU) financial reporting guidelines
