What is the Opportunity?

As part of the Environmental, Social, Governance Centre of Excellence (ESG COE) in RBC’s Internal Audit team, you will play a role in assessing how environmental and social (E&S) risks are being managed, and the effectiveness of related controls. You will assess the design and operating effectiveness of key climate and E&S risk-related controls and initiatives through testing and evaluating research, data analytics and insights. A significant focus of this role will be testing data and controls related to the calculation of RBC’s financed emissions across different asset classes within carbon-intensive sectors, and tracking progress on net-zero emissions reduction targets.

What will you do?

  • Source, assess, validate, and visualize data used for climate and social risk measurement, and work with the Director, ESG COE, and use this data to inform actionable steps in advising internal stakeholders on management and monitoring of E&S risk.
  • With a risk and controls-focused mindset, identify opportunities to assess and challenge E&S risk data processes and controls, and make recommendations for implementing improvements.
  • Assess data quality and results obtained from public and private data sources work with internal stakeholders to improve our climate risk measurement and management capabilities.
  • Work with diverse internal stakeholders across business lines and functions to share assessments of E&S risk data and insights, contribute to improving E&S risk management and controls, business strategy, and ESG and climate disclosures.
  • Assess RBC’s capabilities in measuring financed emissions, setting net-zero targets and delivering carbon accounting insights across the enterprise.
  • Contribute to and lead the development and delivery of presentations and reports.
  • Lead workstreams and collaborations across multiple teams in order to accomplish the above.

Must have

  • Undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline or similar.
  • Experience working in an analytics team, especially those tasked with solving difficult and/or vaguely-defined problems, and an advanced understanding of coding, programming and querying languages, including SQL and Python.
  • Experience developing presentations, visualizations and dashboards for executives and an interest in developing advanced analytical capabilities; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in mathematical, statistical, financial or economic analyses on large, complex datasets and in translating data into business insights and storytelling.
  • A desire and proven ability to build new and innovative approaches to complex problems with minimal direction.
  • Commitment to quality and accuracy with a high level of attention to detail.

Nice to have

  • Master of Management Analytics degree; CFA, CMA or CPA; audit or compliance experience. Knowledge of climate change science with experience in the development and use of climate and economic scenarios, models, projections and data; knowledge or familiarity with the climate risk and/or target setting guidance issued by PCAF, NZBA, TCFD, ISSB, and/or OSFI (B-15).
  • Experience with or interest in agile or design thinking methodologies or frameworks.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative model development, testing and validation.
